Nicopolis

The ancient city of Nicopolis is about a half-hour’s drive away. It was founded in 31 BC by Octavian Augustus in honor of his victory in the battle of Aktio. It flourished during the Roman times, when it had about 30,000 inhabitants.

The main tourist attractions are the Roman and Byzantine fortifications, the Ancient Roman Theater, the Roman Conservatory, the Nymphaeum, the water tanks and the northern baths. We do not miss the Museum of Nicopolis.

Also worth a visit is the oracle of Acheronta (Necromanteion), near the village of Mesopotamos, the gates of Hades. Three rivers in the area were united in the Arewrussia lake (no longer there) in a gloomy atmosphere. Charos led the souls of the dead through the lake to Hades. The ruins of the Oracle are accessible, on a hill overlooking the village of Mesopotamos, where parts of the original structures are clearly visible. Its acoustic structure is still excellent.
